What will my children learn?

We believe that rich, challenging content is essential for the development of critical thinking, analysis, problem-solving and decision-making skills. The Core Knowledge Sequence places a heavy emphasis on traditional, classical literature, history, and fine arts.

Teachers rely mainly on primary sources (classic works of fiction and poetry, biographies, and historical documents) rather than on standard school textbooks. Students read some of the finest works in children's literature by such authors as Robert Frost, Shakespeare, Robert Louis Stevenson, Brothers Grimm, Emily Dickinson, Mark Twain, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Walt Whitman and Laura Ingalls Wilder. Children study the great composers such as Bach, Mozart, Beethoven and Haydn and learn about the art of Matisse, Picasso, Gauguin, Van Gogh, da Vinci and Monet.

World and American civilization and history are a significant part of the Core Knowledge Sequence. A heavy emphasis is placed on the basic values and principles of American democracy, including the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, the Bill of Rights and other foundations of American government and society. Students learn about key events and figures in the American Revolution, Civil War, westward expansion, immigration and industrialization of our great nation. Even early primary grades study world cultures such as Egypt, Mexico, India, Japan and ancient Greece.

In the areas of math and science, this program offers an ambitious agenda. In math there is a strong emphasis on excellent computational skills and understanding basic concepts. In science, the sequence introduces the scientific process of observation, experimentation, deduction and conclusion during the early years. Students explore electricity, astronomy, geology, the human body, the environment, and the achievements of scientists such as Galileo, Copernicus, Isaac Newton, Marie Curie, Albert Einstein and Florence Nightingale.
